Self Affirmations

I think affirmations are one of the best and sometimes one of the most misunderstood techniques available to us. I used the power of affirmations to transform my life. I believe in them 150% and will use them even now – over 20 years later – to uplift and motivate myself. That’s why I dedicated my blog Inspirational Guidance to positive affirmations

You can empower yourself by simply learning how to change your thoughts and the words you use with self affirmations.

An affirmation is a positive statement written and spoken in the present tense that declares your intention to be, do or have something that you want to experience in your life.

To use them effectively an affirmation must not only be spoken but you must be able to FEEL a positive emotion as you speak them.

Negative Affirmations

Everyone uses affirmations, but they are not always in the positive. Examples of negative affirmations we often use include:

positive affirmations

“I am so stupid”

“I can’t do that”

“There is no point in trying”

“Bad things always happen to me”

“I am so clumsy”

“I am not strong enough”

“I always make mistakes”

“I can never be happy”

“I just can’t cope with it all”

These are some of the things I would say and they had a negative impact on how I was feeling and the actions I took on a daily basis. Negative statements like the ones above only serve to keep me unhappy, limited in my choices and creating a cycle of experiencing the very thing I believe.

Once I learnt how to write, speak and FEEL affirmations correctly it really helped me to think and act differently, and as a result my experiences in life changed.

I begin to experience changes in my life that helped me feel better about myself and the more I felt better about myself the easier I was able to affirm that life is ok and the more I affirm that whatever happens in life I can deal with it the better I felt about myself.

Now, that does not mean that negative things will never happen to me, because they do, but with the tools to affirm a different mindset I was able to deal with the situation in a different way. It affected me less and had less of a negative impact.

Learning to end the cycle of negative thoughts and their connection to low moods or a less than great mindset is something I highly recommend. Being able to lift your own spirits is a wonderful gift. Positive self affirmations really helps with that.

Example of Self Affirmations

Below are a few examples of self affirmations. Being able to write your own affirmations is a wonderful skill to have and these are all self affirmations that I have written and used in the past:

“I am going to be who I chose to be”

“I love and accept myself for who I am”

“I am healthy in my body and spirit

“I become stronger in rebuilding my self-confidence every day in every way”

“I welcome positive energy and I use that feeling to accomplish more” “I, Sarah, have great hair!”

“I use my energy to live my life to the fullest”

“I positively engage my thoughts and feelings to experience self-confidence”

“No matter what I’m working on, I’m always committed to completing my goal”

“I trust my thought processes. They are clear and I am very capable”

“I can find my own intrinsic motivator”

“No matter the challenge, I will see it through”

“I enjoy being responsible for my actions”

“My life is full of purpose and passion”

“I embrace change and work towards rebuilding a more confident me”

“I use the small successes I achieve as I rebuild my self-confidence to motivate me to continue working towards full self expression”

“I enjoy my life as my health continues to grow stronger and stronger” “My family loves me dearly and I love them back”

“I am loved”

“My positive thoughts take control of my life”

“I am a confident woman”

“I allow myself to experience happiness”

“I, [name], choose to believe that I am great!”

“I choose to experience happiness in everything I do”

“You are extremely beautiful”

“I am an intelligent human being who easily remembers facts and figures”

“ I choose to live my life the way I want to by being happy”

“I acknowledge that only I can make myself truly happy”

“I approve of myself”

“I forgive myself for ever thinking I did anything wrong”

“I accept that I am responsible for my actions”

“My life is full of loving and supportive friends”

“I choose to believe I can handle my mistakes and grow stronger”

Looking at that list some of these affirmations will jump out at you and others won’t. Use the ones that jump out at you and trust there is a reason they have come to your attention. Ultimately though, write your own, it is a far more powerful way to use affirmations and you will find it far more satisfying to know you changed your life thanks to an affirmation you wrote yourself.
